About the first edition of this title, the newspaper "La Nación" assured in its day: "This is, without a doubt, the most important book on military matters that has been published in the Argentine Republic, for some years now (...)"

Its author, the military man José Ignacio Garmendia (1841 - 1925), assessed a long career in the field of arms participating in the entire Paraguayan War, except for an interregnum around 1869, when he had to travel to Buenos Aires, attacked by cholera, but one Once recovered, he returned to the battlefields. He fought against Urquiza and López Jordan; He did it before the pampas chiefs Pincén, Coliqueo and Catriel, among others, and accompanied Governor Carlos Tejedor in the movement that he led in 1880. Later he joined the forces that made the expedition to the Chaco and from 1890 he held various destinations, as director from the Military College and the Arsenal de Guerra.

On the intellectual level he was a member of the Board of American History and Numismatics, and published an important series of works with high historical value.
