The chronicles of Muratori -Jesuit historian, archivist and ducal librarian in Modena- include three letters from Father Cattaneo, pieces of great documentary value about life in the Guaranitic missions at their greatest splendor. The "Relation of the Missions of Paraguay" is nourished in the most varied edited and unpublished sources —Muratori drew on the correspondence of numerous priests, and in the Annual Letters written by them, and even interviewed a former Peruvian viceroy, visiting in Italy—, although the author never managed to leave his hometown, Modena (Italy), where the Jesuit priest Cattaneo had also seen the light.


The first edition of this work was published in Italian in 1743, and eleven years later the first was published in French. Here we present it in a printed version by the Catholic Society of Good Books, a Parisian institution founded in 1824 that aimed, as we read in the first article of its Statute, “to have many books printed or reprinted and to distribute them at low cost or free of charge; to form successively throughout France deposits of the same works, to lend or sell them at low prices, and finally to use whatev.
