Marc Ferrez (1843 - 1923), of French origin, was in the field of photography the most important professional of the 19th century and of the beginning of the next century active in this country. Ferrez stood out for his work as a landscaper, registering various regions of Brazil. He served in the Geological Commission of the Empire, was also in the service of the Imperial Navy, and during the period 1880 - 1890, he served as the main photographer of railway constructions. Among other series, he dealt especially with the most important urban planning work carried out in the city of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century -between 1903 and 1906- with the demolition of a hill and the creation of a huge avenue that followed the guidelines urban areas of 19th century Paris and Buenos Aires a decade earlier. With these images, he achieved a living document of the redevelopment of the colonial city to transform it into a cosmopolitan city.

The Album includes a unique dialogue between the drawings of each of the buildings that adorned the avenue and the photographic records taken by Marc Ferrez, configuring a documentation of remarkable value.
