Pablo Neruda (Parral, 1904 - Santiago de Chile, 1973) was a celebrated writer, distinguished with the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1972 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford among multiple recognitions. A prominent political activist, Neruda was elected senator, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of his country and a candidate for the Chilean presidency, consul in Sri Lanka, Java, Singapore, Buenos Aires -where he met Federico García Lorca-, Barcelona -where he met Rafael Alberti- and Madrid, and ambassador to France. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and the murder of his friend García Lorca, Neruda became involved with the republican movement, first from Spain and then from France, where he began to write Spain in the heart (1937). That same year he returned to Chile, and only returned to France in 1939, appointed by President Aguirre Cerda as special consul for Spanish immigration in Paris.

During all these years and from the places just mentioned, Neruda maintained an assiduous correspondence with his sister Laura. This book, with edition, prologue and notes by Hugo Montes collects the texts of twenty-eight letters and seventeen postcards addressed to his sister in Chile. All this correspondence is transcribed inside the book, and in a folder, 36 loose sheets are reproduced facsimile, bringing the artist's own calligraphy, typewriting and letterhead closer together.
