While he was fulfilling the mission entrusted to him -in 1781 he was appointed to integrate one of the scientific commissions that demarcated the limits between the possessions of Spain and Portugal-, the Spanish engineer Félix de Azara (1746 - 1821) drew up notes and notes with his observations of birds and quadrupeds. Those initial texts were sent to France for a specialist to study them, although to his displeasure it was noted that they had been published without his authorization, "defective and incomplete", as he indicated. Outraged, he sent a letter to his brother (the one published in this edition) warning that although it is the work that he had sent her a few years earlier, now "it is increased, rectified and much improved”.

Efraím Cardozo will say about this work: "Azara did not waste an opportunity to record his observations about the interrelationships between the zoological and plant world and human culture. Thus, Chapter LXV on the horse is a magnificent monograph about the extraordinary influence of the horses on the Hispano-Guarani culture in relation to historical data, such as the purchase made by Irala in 1551 of a horse "morcillo", the ruling of 1596 that declared owners of the wild horses found after 1580 in the fields of Buenos Aires to the conquerors who caught them, prices of the horses, ways of using them, etc." (In "Paraguayan Historiography ...", pp. 410-411)
