The authors were part of the famous French expedition commanded by La Condamine and made up of numerous academics from that country; among them the astronomer Louis Godin. Several Spanish scientists joined it, including the marine officer Antonio de Ulloa and the naval engineer and scientist Jorge Juan, all of them appointed by Felipe V. That trip was organized by the Paris Academy of Sciences and achieved high scientific results. among other reasons when measuring the meridian that is in the vicinity of Quito, Ecuador, showing that the Earth at its poles suffered a "flattening". After long years of stay in South America, Antonio de Ulloa and Jorge Juan undertook the return to Spain; They did so in different ships in an effort to preserve the information they were carrying back. Juan reached Europe without difficulties, while Ulloa was captured and sent by the British to England. In those islands he caused such admiration that he was incorporated into the Royal Society of London, returning a short time later to the Iberian Peninsula.

In Madrid they carried out their historical, anthropological, natural and astronomical studies by publishing a monumental work; all titles today of great bibliographic interest. The present saw the light in its first edition in 1758, now expanded as indicated above.
